BenRiach 24 Year Old 47.4% Bladnoch Forum Bottle

BenRiach Bourbon Barrel no 5484 bottled for Bladnoch Distillery Forum, 24yo 47.4% Distilled 30th September 1985, Bottled 2nd April 2010, bottle no 76/186

Colour : Gold, beautiful colour

Nose : I really enjoy this. It’s a rather complex whisky with a lot of toffee, almonds and wet grass and the usual sweet touch from the ex-bourbon barrel.

Palate : Smooth, sweet and flowery, vanilla, not as complex as the nose but very well balanced.

Finish : Enjoyable and long, it just keeps on going

Overall: My first sip of this surprised me quite a lot. Even though I have a cold this whisky deliver great in the nose and palate. I must say this in the top three of the many forum bottlings I’ve tried over the years and during this cold winter its really nice in front of the open fire.

Dailuaine 26 Year Old 53.1% Bladnoch Forum Bottle

Dailuaine Sherry Hogshead 4315 bottled for Bladnoch Distillery Forum, 26yo 53.1% Distilled 2nd November 1983, Bottled 7th July 2010, bottle no 114/276

Colour : Hay, pale straw
Nose : a delightful mix of classic dried and fresh fruits, wine and wood. By classic sherry fruits I mean raisins, plums etc. I thorogh search reveals a bit of Vanilla. The fruity/spiced woody nose makes this a dream to nose. I really enjoy it
Palate : It delivers like a minty ex-bourbon, but the palate is soon dominated slightly by raisins and wood bitterness. The delivery is sharp on the alcohol and the bitterness might be too much for some. Me ?. I love the mint/sherry combinations.
Finish : Quite long and like a fresh-mint
Overall this whisky has an unusual property. You often see E150’ed whiskies that looks like a sherry cask, but when you taste it the colour and taste doesn’t match at all. You can say the same here, but you don’t feel fooled, but surprised. This whisky doesn’t look like an ex-sherry cask whisky, but it sure taste like one. Colour adjusted with chlorine ?

Dailuaine 26 year old 53.1%

Dailuaine 1983, 26 YO, Bladnoch Forum, 53.1%, B:2010, cask 4316, 233
bottles.

Colour: Old gold-amber.

Nose: Rich, spicy, on Christmas cakes, leather, vegetamine, some yeast and
old wood. Strong sherry influence.

Taste: Rich, spicy, on leather, polished wood, Christmas cake and orange. The
finish is long, rich, intense, very sherried, spicy, and floral. Very good.

General Impression: A big sherry influence in this slightly acetic (balsamic
vinegar) Whisky, very much in the profile of the Fauna & Flora bottling with
some extra intensity and complexity.

Caol Ila 25 year old 52.4% Bladnoch Forum Bottle

Caol Ila 1984 (25 year old) 52.4%
Bourbon Hogshead 5390
A tarry, creosote laden nose of phenolic, slightly briny peat. Intense and quite heavily peated. Yet beneath all of this there lies some gorgeous, mature orange fruit and earthy, manuery spices.
The palate is pure peat and alcohol! Forceful and slightly fishy, with some distillery character (garden fruits) attempting to push its way through the morass of peat and mouth watering alcohol. It seems a lot younger than 25 years old. Superb length with an iodine and sooty, coal dust finish and a tarry after taste.

With water the nose is lighter, with more distillery character now prevalent. Not as coastal now but still with plenty of peat. The palate is oilier, with some herbal honey and now showing its age. Mature and gentle with a delightful sugar coating to the peat, and a sweet, violety finish. The after taste is still pure coal tar though!

Mannochmore 28 year old 50.8% Bladnoch Forum Bottling

Mannochmore 1982 (28 year old) 50.8%
Bourbon Hogshead 2852
A lovely nose with a veritable bucketful of juicy fruit and honeyed barley along with plenty of supporting vanilla oak and spices. Over time it develops a touch of white fruit and a floral top note. Very luscious!
A big, expressive palate. Voluptuously honeyed with plenty of gentle, earthy spice. Piquant alcohol cleans the middle and allows the spices to run riot on the finish. An exceptional whisky!

With water the nose is even more luscious and juicy. Now displaying masses of semi-tropical fruit all coated with the most gorgeous pure honey imaginable. The palate is lighter and softer, now showing some fleshy banana fruit and botanical notes now the alcohol has been tamed. Still it is wonderfully honeyed, and there is even a slight peat note and finishing with an oak flourish.

Linkwood 26 year old 50.1% Bladnoch Forum Bottle

Linkwood 1984 (26 year old) 50.1% £TBC
Bourbon Hogshead 54

It takes awhile for this venerable malt to get going. A gentle depth of dusty mature honey followed by some old wood spices and parma violet notes. The honey is beautifully layered and over time it becomes more floral.
The palate is quite woody with plenty of tannins, which together with the alcohol dry the mouth out somewhat. I get the impression that there is some honeyed tropical fruit to come out and the finish is livened up with plenty of spice.

With water the nose is oilier but gorgeously fruity and more expressive with some light Satsuma, straw, earth and citrus fruits. Still delicate with some brittle honey and malt now apparent. The palate has now opened up a treat and the suspected tropical guava, honeydew melon has appeared along with a touch of tangerine. Lovely maturity, the spirit is holding up really well, as Linkwood often does, and again the finish is long and full of dusty spices.

Invergordon 36 year old 41.4% Bladnoch Forum Bottle

Invergordon 36yo 1972 (41.4%, Bladnoch Forum 2009, cask 95390,184btl)

Nose: creamy vanilla with big hints of coconut (as expected). Reminds me of certain rums in that respect. Very sweet with notes of Demerara sugar. White chocolate. Some exotic fruits (pineapple, guava). A bit of sourish oak polish. Less complex than an old malt whisky, but very good as a grain.

Mouth: completely in line. Coconut cream, vanilla. Kind of a malibu drink without the stickiness. Rather gentle.

Finish: short and light with a very faint hint of perfume.

A typical old Invergordon, very enjoyable albeit a bit too mellow and mono-dimensional.

Teaninich 27 year old 49.2% Bladnoch Forum Bottle

Teaninich 1982 (27 year old) 49.2%

Bourbon Cask 7697

Deep aromas of mature honey, floor polish, lanolin and spices. Amazingly it is still a bit gristy with a core of granity hard cereal and hints of wheat flakes. Delicate and elegant, the oak supports well.

The palate is gentle and again surprisingly gristy with a distinct sawdust and pure barley husk dust character. Mellow and gentle with oodles of honey and just the right amount of alcohol to balance the dustiness! The finish is fresh and intense and leaves an oily coating to the mouth and a gentle dusting of dried spice.

With water the honey aromas become more pronounced, yet it has developed a touch of confectionary sweetness. The palate is a touch watery and a bit so-so, but then out of nowhere comes a burst of old rose petals, Turkish delight and spices. Even so I would prefer to drink this neat.

Bladnoch 16 year old 55% Sherry Matured

Bladnoch 16 55% Sherry butt #2610; born 7/15/92, bottled 9/11/08.

My poorly trained sensory organs discovered the following:

Colour: yes, it does have colour. Obviously a sherry cask.

Nose:
Oily, toffee, malty, oatmeal, maple syrup with pecan, a little smoke and honey in the back ground. Sherry but not dominating. Water brings out acetaldehyde/butter and citrusy notes. Develops peach and passion fruit over time.

Palate: A nice cascade of impressions, starting off with sherry, then tea (Ceylon), a short moment of wet paper and ending with wood and grassiness. Water brings out creaminess and accentuates the paper and tea notes. Earthy geranium notes emerge. Full bodied with a medium to long finish, with the tea notes lingering.

Comments:
Pleasant complexity and great intensity, but a little unbalanced. I’m not overly excited about smelling oatmeal and nutty maple syrup in my whisky. These elements are a bit too dominant for my taste, but I’m sure lovers of maple syrup sweetened granola beg to differ. Fits in the category of recommended whiskies (83) in my universe.
